Most cleaning schedules fail for the same reason most budgets do: they’re written for an imaginary person with more hours than you have. Forty-item daily checklists look satisfying on day one and get abandoned by Thursday.

This template is built around a different idea: 19 recurring tasks across 5 areas, and you’re not supposed to check all of them every day. The built-in tracker counts what you actually did, and the guide below tells you what a realistic week looks like โ€” so the schedule keeps working in week six, not just week one.

The weekly cleaning schedule with checkmarks filled in for Monday and Tuesday

What’s in the file

Three tabs:

Weekly Schedule โ€” the working grid. Tasks grouped by area (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living areas, laundry & reset) with a column for each day. Click a cell and pick the checkmark from the dropdown โ€” no typing needed.

Monthly & Seasonal โ€” the deep-clean rotation: fridge clean-outs, oven, windows, filters, mattress. Organized as every month / every 3 months / twice a year so nothing lives in your head.

Example (filled in) โ€” a Monday and Tuesday already checked off, so you can see how the counters respond before you start.

How the tracking works

Two formulas run at the bottom of the grid, and we verified both against the example tab before publishing:

Done today counts the checkmarks in each day’s column. In the example, Monday shows 12 and Tuesday shows 9 โ€” counted live from the grid, not typed in.

Week completion divides all checkmarks by the total possible (19 tasks ร— 7 days = 133). The example’s 21 checks work out to 16% โ€” and here’s the important part: that’s not a failing grade. A full week where you do every task every day would be 100%, but nobody scrubs the toilet daily. A realistic, genuinely clean-home week lands around 40โ€“60%.

A schedule that survives real life

A few principles are baked into the task list:

Daily tasks are small. “Wipe counters” and “make bed” take two minutes each. The heavy items โ€” vacuuming, laundry โ€” appear once, and you decide which day they land on.

Every area has a “reset” flavor. The goal of a weekly system isn’t deep cleaning; it’s preventing the slow slide that makes deep cleaning necessary. That’s why “quick declutter surfaces” and “put away clothes” are on the list โ€” clutter, not dirt, is what makes a home feel out of control.

Deep cleans are rationed. The Monthly & Seasonal tab exists so that “clean the oven” stops haunting your weekly list. Pick one or two items per weekend. Marathon cleaning days work exactly once a year; a rotation works forever.

Customizing it

Rename or swap any task. The task names are plain text. The counters use COUNTIF on checkmarks, so they keep working no matter what the tasks say.

Add tasks. Insert a row inside any area’s block; the totals count the whole grid range, so new rows are included automatically. Copy the dropdown by copying any existing checkbox cell into the new row.

Household with multiple people? Duplicate the Weekly Schedule tab per person, or assign areas by column color โ€” simplest of all, put initials in the cell instead of a checkmark and change the two COUNTIF formulas to count non-empty cells: COUNTA range minus blanks.

Using it in Google Sheets

  1. Open Google Sheets โ†’ blank spreadsheet.
  2. File โ†’ Import โ†’ Upload โ†’ select the file โ†’ Replace spreadsheet.
  3. The dropdowns, counters, and all three tabs carry over.

Each new week, either clear the checkmarks (select the grid, press Delete) or duplicate the tab first if you like keeping a history โ€” a month of tabs makes it very obvious which tasks you always skip, which is useful information: delete them or move them to the monthly rotation.

Frequently asked questions

Should I clean a little daily or in one big session? The template supports both โ€” check things off across the week, or do everything Saturday. The counters don’t judge; they just show your pattern. Most people who stick with it long-term end up with 10 quiet minutes on weekdays plus one 40-minute weekend block.

Can I print it? Yes โ€” the grid fits on one page in landscape. Print a fresh one weekly and keep it on the fridge if screens aren’t your thing.

Is it free? Free for personal and commercial use (cleaning businesses included), no signup. Spot a problem? Tell us โ€” we re-test and fix.
